When you love someone, you naturally learn the things that such person hates, and sometimes, go as far as hating such things and shunning them out of love for that person.

This also goes with our relationship with God. The Bible tells us theoretically that we must keep his commandments if we love God. (John 14:15) In order to effectively do his will and have a flourishing relationship with God, we need to know what he detests and do away with them for our good.

In today’s blog entry, God is showing us seven deadly sins he absolutely detests as revealed by scripture. For maximum benefits, you are advised to bring your notes, and bibles as we dive and learn about the seven things our God hates.

Our text is taken from the book of (Proverbs 6:16-19)

16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

1. A PROUD LOOK (PRIDE)

Our text opens up with the sin of pride, as a part of what God hates. A proud look connotes pride in every sense of the word. A feeling of being better, looking down on others, actions that are heavily influenced by the negative side of feeling better than others.

To buttress this point, we have an example of our no 1 adversary, the Devil – who was cast down from heaven as a result of his pride. The devil thought so highly of himself and his gifts that he thought others to be beneath him, including God, his creator.

Studying Satan’s character, especially as the accuser of the brethren, we can see how his pride made him feel like he was perfect, the best of his kind, while others, not so much.

Revelation 12:10b – “for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.”

When you are proud, you lose meekness and humility. Such a person becomes blinded to their weaknesses. Fault finding and eye service become the order of the day and naturally, other kinds of sin find expression in their life.

The sin of pride is especially dangerous because it can cause one to be cast down, and forced out of the kingdom of God, just like the devil. From a clear study of Satan’s gruesome story, we see that God has zero tolerance for proud people, so much so that the bible tells us that God resists the proud and exalts the humble.

James 4:6b – “Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”

Pride always goes before a fall, and as lovers of God, we must examine our lives and be sure that we have not let the devil creep into our lives through the manifestation of pride in any manner.

We must always check the state of our hearts and be certain we are carrying out our God-given purposes with humility and meekness. We should pray for the fruit of humility and meekness, as it is a surefire way of retaining growth, maturity and stature in our relationship with God.

Note: Humility is not stupidity.

2. A LYING TONGUE:

Numbers 23:19 – “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?”

A person who loves God must strive to be like him. That is the whole point of our calling. To be like him and bring others to be like him too. If our heavenly father, whom we love has told us that he is incapable of lying, then we must train ourselves to have that attribute too.

Ask yourself: If God cannot lie, why should I?

As a direct representative of God on earth, he commands us to do away with the sinful act of lying. Especially in today’s world that encourages the act without a moment’s thought. The world has disintegrated to the point that we even lie over insignificant things.

So much that lies are told as a joke over the smallest of things, and God is angry over every lie told, because he detests them. The Bible shows us God’s stance in lying through the psalmist.

Psalm 120:2-4

2 Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.

3 What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?

4 Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.

Today, God is warning us to bridle our tongues and ensure to speak the truth at all times. Do not fall for the Devil’s attempt to make lying a small sin or everyday thing in our lives.

Remember, there is no such thing as a white lie or a small sin in the sight of God. Every sin is capable of bringing one to eternal damnation. So we must beware of the devil’s tactics.

Note –  Talkativeness is a big factor in lying. The Bible explains that in the multitude of words, there will be sin. Proverbs 10:19 –  In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.  We should control our tongues and vet our words before uttering them in order not to fall prey to this terrible sin of lying.

If you love God and desire to be a true child of God, then you should pray against a lying tongue and decide to tell the truth at all times. No matter the cost.

3. HANDS THAT SHED INNOCENT BLOOD:

Exodus 20:13 – Thou shalt not kill.

Taking a human life is a sin that God hates. The Bible warns us against committing sin in various ways. It goes as far as showing us how a killer’s judgement is death. This can be a direct repercussion for the act as we see in today’s world and in the Christian fold could be a severance from God and his kingdom forever. (Eternal damnation)

Killing a person (Young or old), or even a child in the womb, (Abortion) falls into the category of shedding innocent blood. The sin of Murder. A terrible and deadly sin in the sight of God. The worst part of this sin is that the blood cries and testifies against the perpetrator daily in the presence of God.

Seeking vengeance from the God of vengeance.

Remember, it is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God. If you have committed such sin in the past, you must repent truly and promise God in sincerity of heart that you will never commit such an act again.

Seek counselling from a bible believing church or steward and do restitution where necessary. God will show you mercy and rid you of the judgment that such an act has incurred.

4. A HEART THAT DEVISES EVIL IMAGINATIONS:

A heart filled with evil imaginations and devices grieves God to no end. If you find that you have such a heart that perpetually seeks evil on others and generates all sorts of immoral and wicked thoughts, then you are guilty as charged.

If you derive immense joy from plotting the downfall of others and live in constant thought of sin and lustful pleasures of this world then you cannot be a friend of God. Such a person will not have the spirit of God as he cannot stay in a heart filled with unclean and evil thoughts.

When your heart is in such a state, you cannot see God or his kingdom. (Matthew 5:8 – Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.) And as a repercussion of such a state of heart, he will deem you a reprobate and give you to those evil imaginations of your heart. (Romans 1:28 –  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;)

5. FEET THAT BE SWIFT IN RUNNING TO MISCHIEF – (EVIL-DOERS)

Some think of evil, and others go on to perpetuate them. A careful study with the Holy Spirit has shown that a foot that does evil is a direct result of a heart that thinks evil.

When a person goes on to steal, kill, fight, or perpetuate all kinds of immoral acts, best believe that such acts came from a heart that has thought it through. I.e., a heart that devises evil imaginations.

Such people have gone forth to carry out the evil intent of their hearts, causing pain to God and the people around them. These are the people we categorize as evil doers. Pain, mischief and all sorts of trauma follow such people as a result of their wicked ways and God is angry at them every day.

A typical example is people who carry out violent acts, kidnapping, fraudulent acts, terrorism, etc. God frowns at such things and if you love God and have hope of eternal life, you should not be a part of any sort of vices.

We can see how the evil acts of people placed others in a terrible and painful situation through stories littered in the Bible. For example, Cain killed Abel because he offered an excellent sacrifice. Joseph was sold by his brothers because he was loved by his father. Judas betrayed Jesus for money. All these acts were not inspired by the spirit of God in the perpetrators but as a result of the yieldedness to the devil.

6. A FALSE WITNESS THAT SPEAKS LIES :

Exodus 20:16 – “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.”

As we learned above, God detests lies. Furthermore, he hates to see people bear false witness against others, or spread false rumours and lies.

Some people go as far as lying while boldly proclaiming the name of God. Falsely setting up people for disaster and standing as a witness to something utterly untrue and vile.

Through this study, God is warning us against such acts as it grieves God so much. The worst thing about such sin is that not only does it put the perpetrator out of favour with God but it wields the power of leading to unjust judgement, leading to the utter devastation of the victim and sometimes, the shed of innocent blood.

We should also know that standing as a child of God and failing to portray the attributes of God makes you a false witness because you have damaged the image of God by bearing false witness of him through your lifestyle.

We must examine our lifestyle and be sure we are not bearing false witness of God in any shape or manner as well as sprouting lies that can harm the people around us.

7. HE THAT SOWS DISCORD AMONG BRETHREN:

Matthew 13:25 – “but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.”

If you scatter the sheep which God have gathered, then you are an enemy of God. Through our test, the bible says this is an abomination to God,

Proverbs 6:16,19 –

16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

And in further study, we see that the abominable cannot enter the kingdom of God.

Revelation 21:8 – But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Sowing discord and scattering the sheep God has gathered by sending his only begotten son to die for them is a serious offence, punishable by God. If you are of the attitude of chasing people from the presence of God by your unruly, judgemental and sometimes, overrighteous behaviours, sowing seeds of unrest and disunity in the house of God and your immediate environment, then take this as a warning from God.

You must repent with a sore heart and turn a new leaf to avoid God’s judgement.

Jeremiah 23:1-2“Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the Lord.2 Therefore thus saith the Lord God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the Lord.”

Note – God is using this avenue to warn us and help us preserve our relationship with him as well as our soul from eternal damnation. We must take advantage and flee from the seven listed sins and others that God has pressed into our hearts by the spirit and through his written word.

I pray that the Holy Spirit grants us more insights and helps us to correct where necessary and build a stronger bond with him and in him in Jesus’ name. Amen.

You are encouraged to comment as many sins God has convicted you of, listed or unlisted in the text. Help sound a warning to others from engaging in them and avoid the wrath of God.

Till we meet again, keep raising the banner of Christ.

Love, Precious.
